About our Dental Crowns

Affordable Dentures & Implants prides itself on providing tooth restoration and replacement services for patients who might not be in need of dentures or implants. If you are suffering from a damaged or decaying tooth, we can offer dental crowns to help stop further damage and protect you from losing the tooth altogether.

Do I need a dental crown?

Your licensed dentist at Affordable Dentures & Implants can determine if a crown is necessary for your particular situation, but often times you may need a crown to:

  • Hold together parts of a tooth that are already cracked
  • Cover teeth that are discolored or oddly shaped
  • Restore a tooth that is badly broken or damaged
  • Protect teeth that are severely worn down

If you’re a good candidate, your dentist will make an impression, prepare your tooth for the crown, and create a temporary crown that will be worn while your permanent crown is made in a dental laboratory. The permanent crown is usually available in two to three weeks.

At the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown, check the fit and color of the permanent crown and cement it into place.

Same-Day Crowns

At select Affordable Dentures & Implants, an on-site lab allows our patients to have custom crowns in as little as one day.

Affordable Dentures & Implants practices use CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology that houses a camera, computer and milling machine in one instrument. Digital imaging captures a picture of your damaged tooth and eliminates the need for uncomfortable alginate impressions.

The optical “impression” is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dentist uses 3D technology to design your new crown. Then, CAM takes over and creates the crown while you wait. The dentist bonds the crown to the surface of the old tooth, and you’re ready to go. The whole process takes about one hour.

FAQ

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a metal, porcelain, or resin cap that is placed over the top of a damaged tooth. Generally, crowns are used when fillings aren’t enough, but the tooth does not yet need to be extracted. Think of it like a cap for your tooth that will restore its strength and natural look.

What are dental crowns made of?

Crowns can be made of metal, resin, ceramic, gold, or zirconia.

Metal - Only a bit of your tooth will need to be removed and they are usually one of the longest lasting types of crown.

Resin - This type of crown is more likely to break down, but it is one of the least expensive options.

Ceramic - Ceramic crowns are great for front teeth as they are the easiest to color match to your natural tooth color. They cannot withstand as much biting force as metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, but they are a good option for those with metal sensitivities.

Gold - While these crowns are quite expensive, they are extremely durable and strong. Less of your tooth will need to be removed to put on a gold crown and they are recommended to back molars because of their color and metallic sheen.

Zirconia - This is a relatively new material being used for crowns, but it is popular for its strength and aesthetic nature.

Are dental crowns painful?

Getting a crown should be a similar experience to getting a filling. You will be given plenty of local anesthetic to make your experience as painless as possible. There will be a period of adjustment and discomfort for a day or two after the crown is put on, but after that, you should be back to eating and drinking normally.

Some patients report sensitivity in the area after getting a crown and this is normal. If you are having serious pain or discomfort, it is important that you go back to your dentist to have your tooth evaluated again.

How long do dental crowns last?

Your dental crown should last 10-15 years or more if it is well maintained.
